During the second day of the first round of the UCI Track Cycling World Cup, in women's sprint everybody at Astana was really expecting victory for Anna Meares from Australia. Genuine icon of the Sprint events, the Australian was however defeated by the Ukrainian Lyubov Shulika with Drag.
The evening was however very exciting. Meares was not able to obtain a further victory twenty-four hours after her triumph in the Team event where Ukrainians Shulika and Olena Tsos finished at second position. Shulika won convincingly, confirming that she and her Drag Bluebird should also be able to claim an important role in view of the forthcoming Olympic Games.
